past month
i knew that this would happen at some point-- i would completely neglect posting anything for far too long. this past month has been jam-packed with... just about everything. i handed in the essay and have already gotten it back, with a much lower mark than i was expecting. it bothers me. i'm not sure how hard the scoring is, but i'm sure it wasn't my best work. in the end, i will just have to do well on my dissertation.
there has been a lot of work revolving around my dissertation lately. in late january, i went to a dissertation workshop to give all us MAs a better idea of what we were supposed to be doing. it was a huge help, but mainly because the grad student leading my session gave up on us doing any sort of work. instead, she asked us to come up with our dissertation topics and present them on the following day. i panicked a bit, but ended up coming up with a decent collections of topics (war and museums, war and antiquities, and counterfeit technology). i settled on the last topic, and ended up having to give a presentation on it to a small group with about 10 minutes notice (my nerves loved me). after the workshop, i had about two weeks to prepare a research outline. after speaking to one of my professors, we settled on how museums exhibit authenticity in the case of musical instruments. the idea is that i can use the collection that i work with and research the particular case of stradivarius violins. i'm not thrilled with this choice of topic. i'm fairly sure i'm going to switch to something more focus on technology used by the back market, but we'll see how that pans out. earlier this week, i turned in a (shoddy) research outline on the topic of authenticity. being as it is not marked, i plan on re-evaluating my options and handing in a different research outline. in all, that's what's going on with the dissertation.
in other AGMS news, i started my two new courses for the semester: 'museums and archaeology' and 'policies and practice'. both are very interesting and involve a group project and a paper each. they also involve some field trips, including the jorvik viking center and the conservation center in liverpool (among others). the one to liverpool is next week, so hopefully i will have a bit more to add about conservation-- i know you're dying to know all about that.
both of my internships are going well. the one at the rncm has progressed to the labeling stage, which is a bit rough considering the place isn't very well ventilated. i can only do a few hours per day before the fumes get to me and i have to leave. the internship with the manchester museum is going really well and i've started to do the visitor surveys. the results have been very good so far, i'll explain that in more detail when i start processing the surveys. in all, i'm learning a lot about two very different fields in the museum world, which will be essential when i have to find a job in a few short months.
social life has been nothing short of amazing since i moved. we (D, F, S, and i) all went to london in late january, and it was fantastic. i wanted to go see an exhibit at the v&a on counterfeits (dissertation what?), so that was our first port of call.
we enjoyed the v&a, particularly the new medieval gallery and the 3000-yr-old buddhist statue (especially when F pinched its nose and got yelled at-- if ever there was a moment that i wanted to not witness, that was it).
after that, we headed to the tower of london and tower bridge.
we had a bit of a wander over the bridge
then headed to soho to get some coffee and a bit to eat.
after this, we were completely exhausted but still managed to get past parliament, big ben, and westminster at night. it was absolutely gorgeous. i think everyone enjoyed themselves (at least, that's what they tell me), so i'll call it a very successful trip. we got back to manchester at about half eleven (we left at 6 am) and pretty much collapsed into the house. then the next day i cut all my hair off and dyed it blond. the trip was just that life-changing!
in all seriousness, i had been wanting to do this for a while and had been planning it since november. i love it and am probably going to keep it this way. fortunately, everyone else seems to think it's okay as well, so maybe it won't be that strange to you lot when you see it in person.
i know that there are things that i'm missing over the past few weeks, but here are some short bits:
-i spent valentines day with N. we made amazing food and walked around town, basically phenom.
-i'm very very excited about the new season of LOST and have been watching it with my friend L. we take turns cooking and making stupid comments about the episodes.
-it's been 6 weeks and my student loan check still hasn't gone through. thank goodness for tax return money, but the bank needs to get their act together (coughHSBCcough).
-i've recently seen (in no particular order): when harry met sally, ponyo, radio days, the purple rose of cairo, amarchord, and une prophete.
that's all for right now, i will post about my trip to edale later on. hope that the past month has been great for everyone.

happy valentine's day! i realize this is long overdue for an update, and i promise you won't have to wait much longer. today N and i are shopping, cooking, and watching (non-romcom) films. hope everyone's v-day is amazing, regardless of if you're spending it with someone or not. in fact, let's just stretch that and way that i hope every day is amazing. love you all.
